A.A. Safety Posts.
The Automobile Association has recently erected in England some new road signs which will con- siderably increase the safety of rond users, and might with great advantage be adopted also sin other countries.
H
All main roads cover long un- lighted stretches between towns and villages, where powerful head- lights are necessary to pick out the enrves, corners, cross-roads, junctions, and other dangers, and the introduction of these A.A. Safely Posts. will, if. generally adopted, reduce the necessity for using such powerful lights.
The Posts Incorporate the im- portant road principle that one r turally overtakes a red light by keeping to the right of it, and wheh meeting a white light keep- ing ing to its left. If the Posts are generally adopted, the Auto- mobile" Association will provide standard reflex lights in red and white, which can be easily clamp-; ed on te existing, tramway stan- dards, telegraph poles, lamp stan- dards, abutments of bridges) and any other situation where a guid- ing light would prevent motorists running inte trouble in the dark or during dense for.
The new A.A. Safely Posts are conktructed, of sheel, metal, are about # ft. 6 in. high, and are fit- ted with reflectors of high offici- ency, capable of catching the beams of mediam-powered head- lights at a distance of 200 yards. They are lightly constructed (in. the event of ears running inte them no serious damage would be' caused) and by the use of red and white reflectors, facing in both directions, enable drivers passing in either direction to keep a safe
course.
The Posts are marked on the "ro" side with black and white horizontal stripes which give, in fog or half-light, the equivalent of a red light warning; the other sides are plain white correspond- ing with the white reflectors, seen by drivers approaching from the opposite direction.
