The complaint referred to a night soil funk moored under the bows of the Sze Yap, Kongmoon steamers. It was stated that the atench was unbearable when the coolies emptied their baskets Into the junk and the unfortunates whose only homes were ship's cabins were forced to shut doors and windows to enable them to get sleep. In the hot weather the position was described as damp üble.

The correspondent suggested that the junk could be moved to the western side of the next wharf which was empty from midnight to

6 a.m.

Similar Verbal Complaint. Mr. N. L. Smith replied to Mr. Braga's question as follows:

I saw the anonymous letter in qucation. I have discovered that a similar. verbal complaint was some time ago made to an officer of the Sanitary Department who has since departed on leave, un- fortunately without putting any thing in writing on the subject.

It is not easy to find positions for nightsoil junks which will please everyone, but in this case" it has now been possible to make arrangements which will, it is hoped, be an improvement both for the ship's officers in question and for the occupants of the new hotel.

Mr. Braga said the reply was very satisfactory. He realised the difficulty of mooring the junks, but thought that now a position

plaint would be removed.
