What Is 且 Precious Stone? This is a question often asked, perhaps more especially in the East than in Europe, as in the former place one sees so many varieties of coloured stones, both precious and semi-precious.

SOCCER MATCH AT ADELAIDE.

Firstly, we have the diamond which is closely related to conl, and is perhaps, the hardest of all known substances, though easily broken if hit in certain definite directions; another striking fact about this stone is that if an electric current be passed through it, it would turn black like carbon.

Many attempts have been made to manufacture the diamond which is composed of pure crystallized carbon, but its manufacture is at- tended by the greatest difficulties. The scientist who had the greatest success in attempting to manufac- ture diamonds was, probably, Mois- san, who succeeded in his task, but the diamonds were so small that as jewels they were worthless and the expense involved was out of all proportion to the commercial value of the stones.

Early this morning the death took place in the Nursing Home of Mrs. G. W. Seidel at the age of 36 following an operation the previous day. Mrs. Seidel was married in Singapore some three years ago and was very "much liked by many friends. She was buried in the Protestant Cemetery this afternoon.
