In the early part of the season there

"The Nan Yang Maru touched at Nanking on June 19 on her way downstream, and halted near the N. K. "An official of the Japanese Con- sulate, who witnessed the accident from the N. K. K: hulk, Mr. Tabu, the Commissioner of the Custom, and the Captain of the Isokazo's Jaunch, both of whom engaged in the rescue work, declared that all those who fell overboard from the samjians were saved.

"But, as some said it appeared that one had been drowned, our steamer set back to the hulk, and stood there for over two hours. As no one was found, we began to weigh anchor, entrusting the matter to the bulk master. Chinese ship examiners who happened to be on the hulk told us to wait until they received instructions from their headquarters.

"At about half pust two a Chin. ese officer informed us that, as the matter was not clear, our ship might leave the port, adding that the negotintions on the matter would be conducted afterwards.

"Our steamer left Nanking at 3.16 the same afternoon. One of the two sampans which overturned Was towed to the shore by a Cps- toms launch, while the other was towed to the shore by the Isokaze's launch."
