DEFENCE FORCES.

Their Present Strength.

London, June 28.. The strength of the British forces in China was the subject of questions in the House of Commons this afternoon, Sir I Worthington Evans, replying to Sir Frederick Hall, stated that there were seventeen infantry and one Marine battalions and an- cillary troops stationed in China. Hongkong, in addition to the normal establishment, had three infantry battalions.

Casualties.

The casualties hitherto are one soldier killed, and two officers and nine other ranks wounded. Nine others had died,

The average number each week in hospital, for the four weeks up to June 17, was 22 officers and 896 other ranks.

The nearest estimate of the Coat force WAS of maintaining the about an extra quarter million. This was additional to transport charges.

The only theory is that someone with a desire to prepetrate a big hoax suddenly found himself of herself in a position enabling him or her to get possession of the real invitation forms.

Well-known Actors,

The hoax was discovered when leading members of theatrical com- panies spoke to each other about invitations they had received.

Miss Annie Croft, who is one of the principals in "ly Son John" at the Shaftesbury Theatre, found that the actor-manager, Mr. Billy Merson, had also received an in- vitation and was not clear as to the reason.

Miss Norah Blaney, principal of "The Vagabond King" at the Win- ter Garden, thought her invitation was because of some old friendship of her husband, Mr. Philip Dur- ham, formerly of the Scots Guards. She soon found, however, that her husband had not been invited, and then that Mr. Mark Lester had also received an invitation.

At the wedding itself both bride and bridegroom were late--it was half an hour after the proper time when the bride arrived. *

As a result of the broadenst ap- peal made by Dame Madge Kendal, Queen Charlotte's Hospital Mo ther-Saving Campaign has receiv ed between £400 and £500 in sums varying from one shilling to £50, and amounts are still coming in from B.B.C. listeners. The hospit al has received an anonymous gift of £2,000 from "A.B.," Berkeley- square.
