of their business with cities along the Yangtazo. "

When goods were sent, to the abovementioned places from the Colony the usual practice was that they were delivered by steamer to Shanghai, from where the goods would then be shipped to. their destination by the Chinese river boats along the Yangtszp.

In view of the recent insecurity of the places along the Yangtze River, however, the danger from pirates and from molestation by Chinese soldiers,, Chinesa river bonts along the Yangtsza often have to be accompanied and pro- tected by local gunboats. before they can proceed, states the vernacular Press. To the Chin- ose river boats, this additional expense, spent in obtaining the Chinese warships for their pro- tection, has proved too heavy a drain,

This is a great hinderance to the shipment of cargoes to the cities along the Yangtze, and it also explains why the godowns in Shanghai are over-flowing with cargoes that were shipped from Hongkong to the Yangtze within the past few months and which the river boats were unable to de-- liver to their destination.

In the case of Hankow, it is fearned that trade up there is gen- erally depressed by the fact that the Hankow Government has or- dered the people to use the Cent tral Government Bank notes, the value of which is much lower than Shanghai money.
