Training of Natives.
An interesting experiment has been carried on for the past four years, by willing workers, in train- ing native boys on lines similar to those of the Scoute, but quite se- parate and different in dress. an at name, and details. It is tempt to instil character, hand- craft, the attributes of good eiti- zenship and a higher standard of life into these lads, and is carried on under the control of the Boy Scouts' Association. Some 4,000, are in training in the different" centres, including Lovedale, Pro- toria, Pietersburg, Johannesburg, Maseru, &c. The results, so far, have been most encouraging and promise success. A similar ex- periment is being made with the native girls, with equally hopeful -effect..
It may seem fantastic, perhaps, to dream that from small, eccentric beginnings, of this kind something useful.may be evolved, but the formation of a new nation out of the very differing elements exist ing in South Africa is an entirel novel step, and therefore the use of novel methods may not only be excuäable, but desirable..
