TROUBLE ON PRESIDENT
GRANT AVERTED.
What might have been a serious fracas on board the President Grant, which arrived from Manila yesterday morning was averted by the timely intervention of the Police authorities by posting over 100 men of all ranks on the vessel throughout the whole afternoon, while some 120 members of the crew were being paid off.
The President Grant came into port from Manila during yester day morning and in the afternoon information was lodged at the Water Police Station that mem- bers of the Steward's Department had caused some trouble and were threatening to damage certain of the cargo.
A despatch message
was im mediately sent to all Stations on the mainland and in a very short time all available men were hur- ried to the vessel. Divisional In- spector Aris was in charge of the men, who numbered about 100 strong, including European ger- geants, detectives and Indian con- stables. During the earlier part of the afternoon Mr. C. G. Perdue, A. S. P., visited the ship, but he left shortly afterwards.
Paid Off.
It was learned that about 120 members of the steward's staff, comprising Americans and Fl pinos, were being paid off, but were dissatisfied with their treat- ment and had threatened to create a disturbance. On the arrival of the Police, however, everything calmed down and the men received their pay quietly and without in- cident, later leaving the ship sing- by and in small groups. They harl previously refused to have their luggage searched before leaving, but they offered no resistence on learning of the arrival of the detachment of Police officers.
On her last voyage the Pre- sidont Grant was chartered by the Government to transport troops to the East. Her Chinese crow was discharged and sent to Victoria for repatriation to China. Ameris: cana and. Filipinos..were, engaged; to bring the ship across the Pacific.
After calling at Manila, the foreign crew necompanied the ship to Hongkong where they were due for their discharge.
