It all came about when Mr. Fu Sino-en, of the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce, invited General Bel Chung-hsi to have tifin at the Union Club. The aide arrived at the Union Club, entering the International Settlement through the Frenca Concussion, bringing a bodyguard of four armed soldiers.
He was admitted to the club, and shortly after the rumour spread through immediate sections. of the Settlement that armed Cantonese soldiers were holding forth at the club.

"Armed Cantonese soldiers, eh?" the Dutch sailors on duty near the club queried. All right. They would make an investiga- tion. They wasted no time. With rifles at the "alert" and bayonets fixed, the sailors advanced on the club. Pedestrians were warned to get out of the way.
