A BACHELOR TAX.
UN MARRIED MEN VOTE IN. FAVOUR.
The question whether bachelors should be taxed more than the married men brought a reply in the affirmative at the close of a
lively debate at St. Peter's Club Inst night. Curiously enough, it was an audience comprised for the most part of unmarried people, who voted for the motion, and in so doing reversed the opinion ex- pressed at a previous debate at the Kowloon Y.M.C.A. when this evergreen subject was discussed and defeated.
The Rev. Copley Moyle presided over an attendance which included a large number of University stu dents and also a few members of the fair sex who displayed lively Interest in the proceedings.

"It is not good for men to live alone," stated another speaker for the motion, who had delved deeply into scriptural sanctions.
After a most lively debate in T. J. Frice. If marriage was which many others joined in, the success by attainment of the pien- 】 Bures which were its alleged re-motion was carried by 19 votes to compense, then he asked, where was the sense of justice in taking failures, those who would enter into the happy state of matrimony if they could but were prevented by obvious reasons? Where is the Woman?
The speaker went on to ask what conditions of life would be when a bachelor against whom this dis- crimination was exercised, were forced, when called before the in- come tax tribunal to say; "Where is the woman who will marry me," and was confronted with a stern- 'faced lady member of the tribunal who promptly construed this as a proposal of marriage from the harrassed victim? Not overlook- ing the troublesome younger bro- ther, who had the knack of always being in the way, the bachelor as modern conditions of life had made him, had to spend something on an occasional big box of chocolates when Ma was in Hospital, and on quite a few cigars to Pa to keep him in good humour. (Laughter).
Mr. E. A. Len, in supporting the motion, commenced by saying that whereas Mr. Price had appealed to their humour, he (Mr. Len) was going to appeal to their intelli- gence. (Laughter).
Mr. E. A. Lea viewed marriage as essential to the economic sound- ness of a nation in the main- tenance of the birth-rate of its population. For lack of co-opera- Hon in this regard there was pro- vided another reason why bache- lors should be taxed.
Mr. P. T. Lim in opposing the motion, said a strict application of this discrimination against bachelors would mean that a father would be divided against his un- married son, the brother against
