LOST RADIUM FOUND,

ANXIOUS SEARCH IN LONDON

HOSPITAL.

An extraordinary story of the disappearance of radium valued at £2000 from the Charing Cross Hospital, London, and its eventual- restoration was revealed recently.

Grontly to the consternation of the staff the loss of the radium, which had been used in tho operat ing theatre, was discovered a few days previously. A thorough search of the whole building was instituted. Bandages, mediel.c bottles, cupboards, and everything in the place was subjected to tho most careful scrutiny, but no trace of the radium could be found.

The hospital authorities thon held a consultation, and it was felt it was not a matter in which it' would be wise to call in Scotland Yard. An inquiry agent was con- sulted, and the matter placed in his hands.

The inquiry agent examined every part of the building,

the even locking into

dust- bins in the hope of trac- ing the missing radium. It the course of his investigations he discovered that the large amount

of rubbish and waste from the hospital were sent in carts to a destructor at Harrow.

A radium expert, who is a pro- fessor at the Middlesex Hospital. was called in and with a wonder- ful electric machine for detecting the presence of radium the profes- sor and the detective went off to Harrow.

All the earts bearing rubbish. from the hospital were stopped as they arrived with their loads and were subjected to a close-scrutiny, Emp. of Russia Sun., Apr. 10, 9 am. the radium detector being used in Kalgan
