DIAMOND DIGGERS'

WILD RUSH.

EXTRAORDINARY SCENES

What was to have been the big- gest diamond rush in South African history proved a senga- tional fiasco at Grasfontein (says the Morning Post Johannesburg correspondent.)

Over 17,000 persons lined up où a two-milo ne. Acting, it is al leged, on a preconceived plan, the left wing broke und dashed for- ward, and commenced illegal peg ging ten minutes before the official starting time. The police endeav oured to check the rush, but were powerless against 12,000 diggers, who were determined to peg the rich ground at any cost.

By the time the right wing of the line had realised what had happened, it was too late to join in. and among the 6000 left behind were Olympic, South African, and Australian Fanning champions, who had been engaged to run by syndicates and wealthy people, who had paid them huge sums,

I understand that the Mining Commissioner has telegraphed to the Minister of Mines in Cape Town recommending that the pro- clamation be declared null.
