Some time later the demonstra- tion formed again but the crowd was more cautious than at first and contented itself with throwing stones and bricks at the barricades, the space in front of which was!

led with litter.

Several French officials who at tempted to get into the crowd were roughly handled. It is understood that three of the mob were taken into custody, but they were released later.

With the news of the outbreak, French patrols marched up and down the Boulevard des Deux Re- publique throughout the night, while on the other side of the road police of the days before the Can- tonese occupation police were in evidence.

A later survey of the outskirts of the Concession along Sicenwei Road revealed that the sandbag emplace ments were being manned. In ad- dition French patrols were noticed on the roadway, and investigators were stopped several times on Avenue Petain and had to show

their passes.

After midnight the situation in the Concession seemed to be well in hand.

Two More Attempts.. Two further assaults were made un Wednesday night on two of the position besieged or Tuesday. Neither attempt was successful. The Annanmite soldiers and police were forced to fire three times, but as far as is known there were no casualties.

On Tuesday night the mobs un- hinged the central portions of two gutes at two different places, one on Rue Montauban and the other along an extension near Shantung Rond. The attempts last night were to re- two
