SPLUCKY RESCUE.

THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH,

EUROPEAN SAVES CHINESE

WOMAN.

A thrilling rescue.of a young Chinese woman by a European was witnessed on the harbour last A persistent effort by certain evening, when Mr. H. Dreyer, sections of the Chinese in Singa-manager of the Import Department of Messrs. Shewan, Tomes and Co., pore to cause a boycott of the

attempted suicide. trolley buses and trame was in full force this morning.

The effort started two days ago, and it is stated. that Hylams were responsible. Reports declare that when trolley buses stopped pamph- lets were thrown in, and it is pre- sumed that these were addressed to Chinese passengers directing

them not to use the vehicles.

Cause of Trouble.

The incident occurred just after the 8.15 p.m. "Star" ferryboat had loft Hongkong for Kowloon, the woman being amongst the passen- gers on the lower deck. First in- timation of something nmiss came when a commotion was heard below and passengers began shouting that a woman had jumped overboard. The ferry-boat was stopped, and lifebuoys thrown out, whilst British bluejacket immediately jumped into the water but failed to trace the woman.

A faw minutes later, however, the woman was sighted about forty

It is stated that the boycott is a sequel to the shooting affair at Krota Ayer police station on March 12, and the evidence already given at the inquest. Another suggey- tion is that the fact that the Trac-yards away from the ferry-boat, tion Company has its headquarters at Shanghal has some bearing on the position.

At all events the effort at boy. cott appeared to be successful by this morning. Trolley buses com- ing from Katong, which usually are crowded between the hours of eight and nine, contained few passengers, and Chinese were con spicuously absent. On the other hand the small motor buses, which are nowadays entirely Chinese- owned; were all full, and there seemed to be more of them than It is stated that motor bus ever. fares have been increased.

The extent of the boycott indi- cates that there is organisation behind it, and this being so it should be possible for the au thorities to take action to put a stop to a position which might have more serious consequences.

Stones ThrowTI,

Stones were thrown as a trolley bus at the corner of Smith Street and New Bridge Road last night.

A disorderly crowd of Chinese noticed in a bus a man who was taken to be Chinese, and began throwing stones.

The man aimed at then put on his hat and was seen to be a

whereupon Mr. Dreyer, casting off his jacket, dived overboard and swam to her. A strong tide was running at the time, and as it was dark and the woman was wearing A black coat the work of rescue was by no means easy. However, Mr. Dreyer pluckily persevered and eventually gripped the woman ay she was going underneath nud brought her alongside the ferry- boat.

"KINSHAN" BROUGIIT TO HONGKONG!

The crew of the river steamer Kinshan walked off a few minutes before she was due to sail from Canion yesterday morning and gave no reason whatever for their action.

It appears, from accounts given by the officers, that the crew's in- tention was to leave the ship dis. abled for soms time in Canton, but the prompt action of Captain. B. Thompson soon procured aasis- tance from H.M. ships Tarantula, Moth and Moorhen and the Kin-

Many helpers were available and the ship came alongside at 4 p.m. yesterday, when the police, the Harbour Master, and Naval Intelligence Officer went on board for the purpose of making an official report of the affair.

The naval ratings who assisted in bringing the vessel down from Canton were sent back by the Lungshan which sailed at 2 a.m. to-day,

A probable reason for the atti- tude taken up by the crew is that their demand, made sometime ago, for a social room on board the acceded to. ship, had not been Ever sinen the refusal they had appeared to be rather unruly and on Wednesday" last they held a band concert in the after hold

stone-throwing then ceased.

It is stated that alleged intimida-

tors were arrested last night,

Endenvour to Stop The Trums.

A Teochow was brought up in the District Court this morning. before Mr. P, A. F. David, charged with attempting to commit a breach of the peace at the junction of Upper Cross Street and New Bridge Road at 9 p.m. yesterday.

The D.P.P. (Mr. N. II. P. Whil- ley) conducted the prosecution,

A detective stated there was a large crowd in that neighbour- bood last night and he saw several youths removing the trolley poles! from the line cables. He also noticed the accused seated nearby urging them to persist in their efforts and saying that if anyone interfered they would be assaulted. Mr. A. H. Dickinson, of the de- tective department, gave evidence of arresting the accused and cf the magnitude of the crowd.

Accused was bound over in two Buretics of $500 each to keep the pence for six months, in defaul six months' simple imprisonment.

The Police View,

The police view is that the situation is due to entirely need- less, panic on the part of the: Chinese public, following the ap- pearance two days ago of anony mous notices in various parts of the town..

There have been no cases of assault or intimidation other than the case of stone-thrawing report

ed above.

been referred to and their express permission obtained.

The matter apparently ended for the time being, and there was no manifestation of trouble until the Kinshan arrived at Canton, when the whole crew, with the exception of the compradore's staff and the deck-coolies, walked nabore without any notice. From the Canton Bund they later watched the steam- er as it resumed the return trip with naval volunteer hands aboard.

Later.

It is understood that some dozen of the Kinshan's crew, who deserc

ed the vessel at Canton yesterday, returned to Hongkong last night by s.s. Taishan.

Negotiations are proceeding be- tween the oficials of the Hong- kong, Canton and Macao Steam- buat, Company and the Union, and it is understood that a satisfac tory agreement will most likely be reached.

So far as can be ascertalaed, the trouble is confined to s.a. Kinshar, no other bonts on the rua being affected.
