Mr. Bertram Giles, the British Consul General is now reported to be severely wounded. There are probably other British casualties.
Router.
The situation is still obscure and full comfirmatory reports are awaited, but it is known that a British doctor has been killed, the British Congul-Generál seriously wounded, numbers of British and American naval men wounded, whilst quite a large number of foreigners, said to include 100 Americans, are still unaccounted for. It is feared that the Japanese Consyl-General has been killed.
Most of the casualties arose from the shelling of the city by the evacuating missionaries from the attacking Southern forces which are said to have been badly out of hand. They attacked and looted the British Consulate, and it was only as the result of a gallant raid by naval men that the distressed foreigners were eventually evacuated.

ARREST OF ALLEGED BLACKMAILERS.
TAX ON PORK.
The rise in the cost of living locally is generally regarded as being due to economic causes, but it would appear that in regard to pork, at least, the higher cost has been influenced to a ecrtain extent by the activities of blackmailers who have been "squeezing" im- | porters of meht.
Criminal Investigation Depart- ment officials have during the week arrested a number of alleged blackmailers belonging, "it is officially stated, to a gang of men who have banded themselves to- gether into an Association for the
