THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH,

V. D. A. MEETING.

APPEAL OF CHRISTIAN CHURCH.

5."

Speaking at the annual meeting of the Victoria Diocesan Associa- tion (Hongkong Branch) held at the Helena May Institute yostor- day evening, Mr. T. B. Woods of Foochow said that missionary workers who had left Fakien pro vince had every prospect of get ting back there again. He did not want people to believe that they had sustained a blow from which they were not going to recover.

Shortly before he left. Foochow an ofleer of the Southern Army asked that his daughter should enter the Christian College. Hei had come to the conclusion that wus the best place far her.

With regard to the schools in Fukien the general impression he had was that they were going for ward and not falling back. As far as one could see the Christian Church was one of the few per- mament things in China and the only thing which would heal the country's wounds.

A Useful Organisation, The Bishop of Victoria presided at the meeting and sald that at the V.D.A. reception to the shop of London last December, the latter made a strong appeal for corporate effort on the part of Church people in Hongkong to back up the work of the diocese as a diocese.

"I have no doubt," continued the Bishop, "that on June 20th, at the V.A. reunion in London, the Bishop will make an equally stronk appeal to people at Home to back up the work of this diocese.

"The Victoria Diocesan Associa. tion is the natural organ through

which the different groups con- nected with Chinese and Colonial Church lite, can help forward the

work of the diocese.

"I do now want to make any ex- travagant claims for the V.D.A.

The Hongkong branch was started in March 1921. The membership: in England is rather more than a thousand, and in Hongkong the membership is two hundred and sixty.

The reunion in London last year was presided over by Sir Frederick Lugard, and the Rev. R. J. North- cott-lately Military Chaplain i Hongkong-gave the address nt the morning service..

There was a good representation from Hongkong and South China at these gatherings.

Meetings in Hongkong. Two conversaziones were hold in Hongkong during the year with a view to deepening interest.

The first took place in April and was intended to illustrate some of the Educational work being done in the Diocese

The second was held in Novem- ber, and was Illustrative of Social and Medical work.

At each of these gatherings there was an attendance of some 370.

A Focussing Point. "While the Victoria Diocesan Association is a comparatively smal organisation, it is a very useful one. It forms the natural focussing point for different ne- livities within the diocese, and the Bishop knows that in the V.D.A.

On December 27th the V.D.A. organised a reception for the Bishop of London, at which some seven hundred (700) people were present,

"As Bishop I should like to thank the V.D.A. for providing me both with a Diocesan Chaplain and a Diocesan Secretary. I regard nei- ther of these offices as luxuries. They are essential to à Bishop for the effective discharge of his work, us anyone who has a real inside knowledge of a Bishop's duty would at ones appreciate."

The Bishop thanked all who had worked for the V.D.A. during the past year and those who had taken.. up positions of responsibility for 1927.
