LEAKY ROOF.

EXPERTS AND "SUPER-

EXPERTS,"

"My guess would be as good as anyone olan's guess," said Mr. D. S. Scott, the district manager of the Texas Company, giving evidence this morning in the part-heard case in which the Texas Company is 'suing Mr. A. J. Lane, architect, for the value of goods supplied, The remark was passed in connec- tion with the whereabouts of a leakage in the roof of No. 4, Liberty Avenue, Homuntin.

Mr. H. J. Armstrong appears for the Texas Company, and Mr. Lanc is represented by Mr. F. G. Vaux.

A sulesman for the Texas Com- pany, said he visited the house in order to prepare an estimate for covering the roof with "Texacout." There were numerous cracks in the parapet, and he told the architect that repairs would have to be done before the "Texacont", could be upplied.

Mr. Lang told him that the origi- nal contractor had absconded, that In order to get the job rushed through unskilled labour had been employed at day rutes. The job had been rushed through' be- cause the owner wished to occupy the house.

Mr. Vaux:-- put it to you that what you said, about unskilled labour was not told you by Mr. Lanc? It was told me.

On that occasion?--Yes. By Mr. Lane--Yes,

Are you sure that Mr. Lane said that the job was rushed through? ---Yes.

Is Lordship:-Did you think that if the track were repaired and the roof covered with "Texa- coat" it could be made water- tight?--Yes.

Mr. D. S. Scoll, re-called, pro- duced two roof plans showing different types of construction. He was an expert of roofs, having had four years' experience of roof construction in Hongkong..

Mr. Yaus:--Could you tell the manner of the construction of the roof of this house --Not with the brief examination I had.. It is im- possible to say from the cover- ing what is underneath.

Would you deny that an archi- tect could tell the nature of the

underneath?—No, material

} wouldn't deny it, but I should say he was a super-expert...

cannot see it."

His Lordship:-Nor the parti- cular kind.

Defendant said that the roof con- structed at Liberty Avenue was not satisfactory, owing to the in- ferior quality of the Canton tiles. "There were two courses open to One was to take up the tiling and re-bed it-un expensive job. I looked round for a chenper method and I was informed that Texacont' would make the roof water-proof. In the case of this house it was not successful, though a second coat was applied.

His Lordship is to visit Homun- in this afternoon to examine the rool,
