HARROW AND THE
'RUGBY GAME.
INTERVIEW WITH THE HEADMASTER,
The question of the adoption of the Rugby code' at Harrow School has been discussed at latervals for soveral years since the War: For
a period before 1914 it was played ducing the Baster term, but, later. Association took its place, the Harrow football game, which is a traditional institution on the Hill, being played between Founder's; Day and Christmas..
The handling cade has some very keen partisans among the masters and the boys of the school, and Heveral of the assistant mastera are members of the Harrow Rug- by Club, and play each Saturday, anong, them, Mr. E. F. Houaden and Mr. R. L. Holdsworth, the ot Reptonian and Oxford University cricket and Soccer Blue, who bol take a leading part in connection "with the sport at the school.
This term the question of the adoption of the Rugby game has again come up, and very serious consideration has been given to it. Dr. Cyril Norwood, the Hend- mastery in an interview with an Observer representative, gave a clear explanation of the new pro- posal. le said:
+
The question of the introdue- tion of the Rugby game to Harrow. School has been mentioned to me on my, occasions since I have been here. by old Harravians, as well as by parents, masters, and hoys.. I thought the matter over very seriously, and I came to the conclusion that the best method would to adopt Rugby after Founder's Day and to play it unt the end of the Christmas term, 'und that the Harrow game should be s played during the Lerit term in stead of Association,
The first opinion I took on the proposal was that of the masters, and at a meeting the scheme was approved, nem. con., forty-six of them voting.in favour.
"I next placed the matter be- fore the Philathetic Club, which is co-optive body and not elective. It is composed of seventeen of the older boys at The school, whose opinion is valuable as representing the school. They considered the matter very fully and carefully, and in the ent, by a majority,, they disapproved of the proposal.
"I next took a vote of the school. It was not a compulsory vote, and the result was that 366 valed in thyour and 214 against. There the matter rests present. Al- though these opinions have been taken uo decision has been made. "The view of old Harrovians," Dr. Norwond continued: "naturally has to be considered, but theirs is only one view that would have to be taken into account. The posi tion of the Harrow game will noti be affected. It will remain just the same; but will be played dur ing the term, when the House mal- ches will be decided and the games with Old Harrovians played. The practice of awarding flannels' to those who secure their place in the eleven will be retained and the traditional games, will be played on Found's Day;
"Association." he said, "is play- ed for five weeks in the Lent term, but it is not taken very seriously. It is a highly scientific game'nowa- days, and the condition of our foot- bal: fields and the short period.in which it is played are considered to be against the attainment of u high standard. The final decision in the matter will rest with the Governors, and will be made pro- bably in February next.
