SHEEP DROWNED.
Two shepherds waded neckdeep in a desperate but unsuccessful attempt to save a thousand sheep in flooded land between the rivers Esk and Eden, at Rockcliffe, near Carlisle.
The sheep, brought down from the bleak uplands for the winter months, were trapped when the highest tide seen in the Solway for many years flooded the two rivers.
The shepherds, William Watson and William Percival, saw the danger and with two clever dogs attempted to drive the animals to safety. They had gone about a mile when the tidal wave, twelve to fifteen feet high, approached. The sheep were terrified, and re- fused to go further through the water:
The shepherds made frantic efforts, to save their flock. and stayed with them until the tide forced them to abandon the task and make for the shore. Thirty sheep were saved.

OWNERSHIP OF 120,000 SQUARE MILES,

Within the next few weeks the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council will give a decision by which either the Dominion of the Colony of New- foundland will guin possession of more than 120,000 square miles of Labrador territory, the ownership of which has been in dispute for a quarter of a century.
Recently, in the Committee's .council room at Downing-street-
fl Cosy cak-panelled chamber, whose four coal fires made a home ly crackle and blaze-the last shots of a verbal battle which has lasted nearly a month were fired. The judges were the Lord Chan- cellor (Viscount Cave), presiding and Viscount Haldane, Lord Fin- Hay, Lord Sumner; and Lord War-
rington.
It took five years for the parties to reach an agreement as to the wording of the question to be de- elded by the Judicial Committee. This was: "What the location and definition of boundary as be- tween Canada, and Newfoundlan in the Labrador peninsula under the Statues, Orders In Council, and Proclamations?
Brielly, Canada's contention was that Newfoundland could lay claim only to the coastline of La- brador, which had been granted to her to enable her to carry on her fishing industry. On the other hand, Newfoundland held that her jurisdiction exfèended to a certain depth inland.
The disputed territory is a tremendously rich prize, for it in- cludes 60,000 square miles of spruce forests representing untold wealth in pulp wood for paper- making. Even at a very low esti- mate, the territory, undeveloped as it is as the moment, is said to be worth £50,000,000.
Both Canada and Newfoundland have spared no expense in their efforts to make good their respec- tive claims. It is understood that the total costs of the action will considerably exceed £250,000, 7
