THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH,

THE POLICE BALL.

A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION LAST NIGHT.

The City Hall presonted a bril liantly gay appearance last even ing, the occasion of the annual Hongkong Police ball. Now ideas were brought to bear in the matter of, decoration and the result was particularly pleasing. The' trance ПЯ tastefully it with coloured lights concealed in the banks of greenery on either side. The entrance hall was hung with bunting arranged in novel and unusually attractive manner. Draped langs hung at intervals up the main stairway to the ball rooms,

St. Andrew's Hall has rarely looked so inviting as last night. A'scheme of red, white and blue decoration was worked out round" the walls, strings of coloured lights crossed and recressed the room and the centre was occupied with a huge representation of a Vari-coloured Christmas tree. lights were concealed within the branches and lent a wonderful touch to an altogether charmingly decorated room. From a conceal ed hiding place in the corner were flashed at intervals spot lights when the general lighting scheme was lowered.

#

The "Dew Drop Inn," St. George's hall was similarly decorated with the exception of Christmas

tree while the band- stand between the two rooms was hung with greenery, lights, and Chinese lanterns.

The verandahs outside, were enclosed and suitably furnished for sitting out. The supper room was nearby, being hung, with flags, two huge Police blue ensigna being draped at one end of the

room.

"

Down belew there was a com- fortable card room by the side of the main stairway, cut off from the rest of the building by a wall of flags. To the right of the en- trance hall was the meeta of many, the "Dew Drop Inn? a sign with an invitation which was not lost on the vast majority.

Altogether the appearance of the whole building was exceeding ly cheery' and Christmas-like and the spirit of revelry was awake among all the guests. a most en- joyable evening being spent by all.

ATTEMPTED THEFT.

GOLD WATCHES CONCEALED

IN SLEEVE.

"There was a sequel at the Cen- trai Magistracy to the recent at- tempted robbery at Mosers. Sennet Freres, two men being charged with attempting to steal a num- ber of gold watches.

Outlining the case Sgt. Meadows said that at 11.30 am. on Decem- ber 14, three men entered Mesars. Sonnet Freres' shop and asked to.

820 some watches. Mr. Loon Weill, an assistant, displayed a number of watches and was in the act of getting others from a showcase when he noticed one of the men put his handkerchief over one of the watches and slip both handkerchief and watch up his sleeve

Feeling for Money.

Mr. Weill sent for the police keeping the three men engaged in conversation. One of the three ap- parently suspected trouble and got away before the Police arrived.

When the Police arrived, the defendant refused to be first

throwing searched, afterwards three watches across the counter. A fourth watch, which did not forma part of the charge, found under a stand near where the second defendant had been standing.

Wis

Mr. Leon Weill corroborated, the Police evidence.

In reply to the Magistrate, the first accused said that he had no intention to steal. He was feel- ing in his pocket for some money. The second accused said that he knew nothing about the matter at. all. He was merely in the shop. at the time.

His Worship found the second man "not guilty" and discharged him.

Sat., Meadows informed his Worship that the first abcused was a returned banishee, having been from the Colony banished eighteen months ago.

His Worship sentenced the man to nine months' imprisonment. for returning from banishment and to three months' for the attempted. larceny of the watches, both with hard labour, the sentences to run consecutively.

The Officials.

The case concerned the 'death of two' Chinese who were killed at the Government Quarry at Teat Tsze Mul on December 10 by a falling boulder. It was stated that blasting operations had been car- ried out and the usual procedure. was to send the workmen away from their place of work and al- low at least ten minutes before they returned.

The workers usually ignored this and rushed back to work im- mediately: This happened at the quarry and a boulder fell and One man crushed the two men. was killed outright, his head being badly crushed. The other was ad- mitted to the Government Civil Hospital with his left leg almost severed. He died the following day.

The jury returned a verdict of accidental death, and found that the foreman was negligent in his duties. They also added the rider given above.
