This witness would bear cut a statement made by the defendant to the effect that they were both seasick when the pirates entered their cabin, that in view of their condition they were little inter- fered with except when the eighth defendant was called upon to read, just a bandage for one of the pirates, and later to share his bunk with a pirate leader who used the bed for smoking opium

A Tallyman's Story," As regards No. 5 defendant, it had been said of him by the No. 8- defendant that he looked very much like the long-coated pirate who asked to have the bandage readjusted round 丸 wounded Anger.

No. 1 defendant was inter rupted by the Magistrate inhia cross-examination of the witness. Mr. Lindsell.said: Your cross examination is lending you deeper and deeper into the mire. It only incriminates you more and more. So many of these things would not have come out if you had not asked those questions.

Defendant: I don't care if these things are taken down..

His Worship: You don't care? You are being incriminated deeper] and deeper.

Defendant. That is to say don't care because I have been wrongly identified.

After further evidence had been taken Mr. Lindsell asked the Crown Solleitor if there was any hope of finishing the case before Christmas.

Mr. Holmes replied that they had twenty-four more, witnesses to call, apart from police officers.

Mr. Lo's Suggestion.

Mr. Lo suggested that His Wor- ship should give his time exclu- sively to the case, and leave his others to be heard by other Ma gistrates. Mr. Lo pointed out that there was necessarily a good deal of cross-examination to follow fur- ther evidence.

His Worship before adjourning the hearing until Thursday mor ning, intimated that he would consider the possibility of adopt- ing Mr. Lo's.suggestion..
