Mr. Jones was induced to stay on for the Open championship, nearly a month later, and the additional expense incurred was borne out of his own pocket. The cost of win- ning the champlonship was a good' deal more than the thousand dol

double that amount. The winning of cham pionships is not all honey, the financial burden attaching to a player in Mr. Jones's position be ing far heavier than most people imagine. Mr. Jones has only to raise his little finger and crowds of the "millionaire" folk would be only too ready to finance any trip that has for its object the glory o American golf. But Mr.. Jo holds strong views on amateurism in golf, and he would scorn to ac- copt a single farthing from any source that had not the backing of the United States Golf Association.

It would not be at all surprising if Mr. George Von Elm, the new American amateur champion, took Mr. Jones's place, and made a bid for both British championships -Amateur und Open. Mr. Vir Elm, who tied with Mugen for third place in the British cham- pionship, was only four strokes he hind Mr. Jones at the finish of one of the fiercest and most sensation: al struggles in the history of the game. Mr. Von Elm, a very.enter- prising young man and fired' with ambition, now plays most of his golf at Los Angeles, where he is worshipped by the "movie" people.

SIR ANDREWS.

In view of the fact that the championship will be played at St. Andrews, it is interesting to know what Mr. Jones thinks of the vlag- sie link, more especially as Mr. Crane, a distinguished American authority, has such a poor opinion. of the course. Mr. Jones says: "I have found that most of the American courses especially those- inland, may be played correctly the uame way round after round. The holes really are laid out scientif- cally; visibility "is stressed; you can see what you have to do vir tually all the time; and when once you learn how to do it, you can go right ahead, next day, and the next day, and the day after that. Not so at St Andrews. The course is broad and open, and the rough is distant, and the fairways con- front you in almost every direction. The greens are huge. And with all that, and with almost all the visible universe to shoot into, you may plume yourself on any round of 72 to 75 that falls to your fortune.

"From tee after tee you are offered about all the real estate you can cover for your drive. But you would better place that drive with some thought and exactness, or your second shot will be a terror. The 14th hole, for example (known as 'Hell'I think it is, perhaps, the finest on the course--may be played four different ways, all cor rect and widely at variance, ne- cording to the wind. And the. wind is a worthy "foe. It is just

as likely to oppose you all the way out, and turn as you turn, and bat- to you all the way back. Or it may follow you round the entire horseboe. You must use some- thing besides shots and clubs when playing at St. Andrews. I can learn more golf in a week on that, course than in a year on many a sterling championship test in America." While Mr. Jones would not put as much as a spade into the hallowed ground, Mr. Crane would. turn an army of men' loose on tho links with the one idea of bringing the place up-to-date:

A fluent talker, the bird had been introduced to most of the Ambassadors of the world, Prime Ministers of England, and to many other people of note.
