MR. LLOYD GEORGE PUTS PARTY OUT OF STEP.

London, Dec. 14. The fusion of all the Liberal forces and funds, which was n resolution made at a meetli of the Party on November 24 following on offer by Mr. Lloyd George, to finance the Liberals at the next General Election, now. seems unlikely,

Viscount Grey, presiding at a dinner in honour of Mr. Vivian Phillips, the chief Liberal', or- ganiser, declared there was no question of leadership or creating an organised schism within the Party, but feeling of mutual trust was absolutely impossible. Confidence had been destroyed, and it was impossible to keep atép with Mr. Lloyd George.

If we said we were ready to march side by side we should be ready to fall out of step within a short time. It is not we, but he who changes step. It is not Lord Asquith and his friends who are rosponsible for disunion.".

Viscount Gray's speech in. 50. which the cause and "consequences 51. of the differences in the Liberal 52. Party were frankly examined, was enthusiastically received. He de-56 dlared they were not prepared to conceal the fact that confidence 63. had been destroyed by Mr. Lloyd George's conduct in regard to the disposition of party funds, which do. he controlled; by the manner in 70. which his land campaign had been launched, by his action dur- Ing the general atrike, by his more recent speech on China, and by his suggestion that the Liberal ideal. should be merely to hold the ba lance of power in the future in Parliament and insist on terms with the Labour Party-British Wireless.

OBITUARY.

MR. C. H. BELL.

A telegram has been received in Shanghai announcing the death of Mr. Cyril Hennessey Bell, A.GA, head of the Hankow branch of the firm of Thomson & Co., char- tered accountants.

The late Mr. Bell, who was a little over 10 years of age, arrived in Shanghai about 15 years ago to join the firm of Thomson & Co., and after a short stay went to Hankow to open a branch of the firm in that port, and he remained in charge of the branch continuous- ly up to the time of his death.

Coming from thorough Irish stock, Mr. Bell inherited the most pronounced sporting instincts of the race. In his time he owned

and trained many race ponies in Hankow and, though proverbially Fas blind as a bat and having none

too robust constitution, he insisted on riding his own ponies both on the flat and in steeple chases and he was a regular thruster in the country, riding the straightest and hardest course of any. His physical handicaps pre- vented him becoming a great jockey, but he was not without his successes and many times was first past the post. He counted- Rugby football as in no way in ferior to riding and played every possible occasion for sheer, love of the game.
