A Chinese friend told us recently that in his neighbourhood, the rents of houses had been quadrupled in three years. The present policy of the bodies we have named benefits no one but the wealthy owners of houses already built and penalizoa most heavily the poorer Chinese workers who must, perforce, live in evercrowded and Insanitáry barracks, a' prey to epidemics like the cholera which decimated their number last sum-

'GOOD WORK.

The YM.C.A. have recently rendered a good service to Shang- hai in building a model block of workmen's houses in Pootung. These houses arc built on .3 business basis. They are let at a cheap rate, but it is expected that they will repay the cutlay on ther construction and yield a moderate return in interest. We comment this scheme to the attention of those who employ large number: of workers. Capital invested in the provision of houses for the masses might not yield a large return but if it went some way towards making these workers healthier and happier it might prevent the loss of much valuable time in strikes and labour distur- bances. Such houses must be. built on the outskirts of the Settlement and a corollary of their construction would be good roads and swift and cheap transit: We hope that the labours, of the Trafic Commission will contribute towards the provision of this desirable end.

The bravery displayed by twợ" naval officers was mainly respon- sible for saving the cruiser. Cal. cutta from ta' fate similar to that which overtook the sleop Valerian, during Bermuda's hurricane on Friday,

The Calcutta was lying at her mooring in the naval dockyard when the full force of the hurri cance fell upon her. In two minutes, 27 of her 28 hawsers parted, and her position was perilous. Lieutenant Roskill, of H.M.S. Wistaria, and Sub-Lieu- tenant Alershankey, of H.M.S. Capetown, immediately donned life- buoys, and in a terrific wind swam out to the Calcutta with lines. The crew havled more hawsers: on board, and the vessel was saved.
