THE NEW CARS

THE 1727 changes in "Morris" Cars are no mere

seasonal variation. The drastic sacrifice of the old, cherished radiator tells you that. The new cars are "wider purpose" cars, and the big new World" radiator is the symbol of that purpose

AVERAGE MOTORIST CARELESS.

LOCKING DEVICES IGNORED.

DY ISRAEL KLEIN.

American motorists are paying! higher insurance premiums on their automobilas because of their carelessness and forgetful- nees.

They are, losing from $35,000,- |000 to $50,000,000 a year, let alone

time from their work and use of] their cars.

Thie loss is the rosult of the growth of automobile thefts that ie going on, apace with tho increase in motor care. Despite greater vigilance on the part of the police, and some 150 different locking devices, these thefts are growing and making this problem more difficult to solve.

Only 30 per cent of all motorista are insured against. thoft of their automobiles, and only 20 per cent. of the insured cars stolen are not recovered. Yot this small proportion of all the cars in the country, perhaps only about 50,000 care in all,; bringe their loss up to some $50,- 000,000.

Those figures are furnished by the American Automobile As- sociation and the National Automobils Underwriters' Con- ference, and may be taken as authentic.

Owner Doesn't Help..

The aggravating point is that these thefts aren't in, the least) way discouraged by the average driver. He just forgets, or doesn't take the additional pains to lock) his car.

OIL CONSERVATION. A New

WASTEFUL METHODS OF

U.S. PRODUCERS.

One of the most striking state- ments in the final report of Pres ident Coolidge's. Oll Board, which will be submitted to him within. the next three or four weeks, is that a serious oil shortage is in prospoot within a comparatively few years unlose 'conservation methods are omplovod. President Coolidge will be informed in the report, it is understood, that wasteful methods are now em- ployed by many oil producera, and that measures must be taken to assist in a solution of the pro- blom of the industry. No radical legislation, however, will be re- cómmended, as it is the opinion of mombeta of the Board that drastic Government regulation would not offer a proper solution.

The report will point out that if it were physically possible to extract all the oil now known to oxist in the United States at as rapid a rate as during recent years the entire supply might be exhausted within the next decade. It will not be possible to maintain that rate, it will be stated, and therefore no complote famine will ocour at an early period. The anaua! production, howover, ac- cording to the view of mombors of the Board, is likely to fall off within the next six or eight years to such an extent as to cause a very serious situation. The Board's findings will deal entirely with the domestic production situation and will not go into the question of prices or imports.- Reuter's Trade Service.

So the underwriters approve other forms of locks, that are semi-coincidental, or require an additional operation before leav ing the car. There is the transmission lock, the wheel lock and other forms that come in this class.

They include six four-cylinder Cars and one light six, bolow $800, and eight light sixes from $825 to $995.

So it is found each type of lock has its peculiar disadvantage.

Despite these minor faults, however, the argument is present- ed that those locks at least will discourage the thief from trying to steal the car.
