CRICKET NOTES.
[BY TWO LEOS."]
Last Saturday and Monday saw quite a number of friendly matches played, and conditions were all in favour of the batsman, hence there wore several good scores made.
Chief interest was taken in the first Interport Trial, which took place over two days on the Cricket Club ground. Of the players who took part in this game, four or five are new arrivals. The Selection Committee will have no light task in choosing the team to do duty for Hongkong in Novom- ber.
* *
It appears that we shall be very well provided for in the batting department, but there seems to be a dearth of bowlers, especially of the type of Bowker, who always comes off on big occasions. Lagt week-end he bowled 35 overs, of which 8 were maidens, accured 10 wickets for 94 runs a very good average, in my opinion, for a first trial game.."
►
The next bowler who comes to mind for opening the attack with Bowker, is E. B. Reed--that is, if he can play. Goodwin may get place in the team as a change bowler. Apart from these, none of the bowlers who were tried were up to Interport form, but, of course, a lot may happen between now and November 11th,
* # *
On the batting side, as revealed by present form, the first two to demand attention
are Major Lightfoot and Capt. Bridgland. I am rather inclined to think that the Major takes too many chances by stepping out to the ball. He is particularly partial to slow bow- ling and a fast scorer Capt Bridgland' is a beautiful bat. He times the ball well but should be more careful with his short runs. He was very nearly run out twice. last week-end. As a bowler, his slow deliveries are too expensive.
#
|
Parker, who I believe arrived in Hongkong near the end of last sea- son, strikes me as being a good all-round man, He can always be safely tried as a change bowler for a few overs. Ismail is pro- bably the best wicket-keeper, we have. He stands up, well to! Bowker and has A safe pair of hands.
"" #
I believe there will be another trial game next Saturday when "Dick" Hancock will captain a team against a side chosen from the Rest. According to present form, my team to represent Hong- kong would be:-Hancock, Pearce (if he returns in time), Bowker, Reed (if fit), Owen Hughes; Bridgland, Lightfoot, Hayward, Capt."Morris, Ismail and Parker.
*
*
Fincher will need a lot of watch. ing. He has a sure eye and at times can make a big score. He is probably one of the safest field- ors in the country." It is a pity that young Rumjahn is not play- ing as well as might be expected. Two or three seasons ago ho could always be depended to minke 30 runs and WAS a good all-round M31.
*
*
I notice from the League fixtures that a few Clubs have arranged matches to be played before the Interport. It might be wise to postpone these games as the best players will be turning out for the trial matches during the week- ends.
