RECREIO'S WIN OVER KOWLOON.
[By "Wanderer."] Writing recently of the Club de Recreio's league prospects during the current season, I expressed the opinion that the Portuguess club was "destined to turn out-a workmanlike side likely to disturb some championship candidates." How truthful were those words, was demonstrated on Saturday when, in the very first match of the season, they administered a savere shock to Kawloon, the champions, by defeating them on their own ground.
Judging by their form against the "Tigers" on Saturday the Tamar eleven, if circumstances allow the team to hang together, is one of the strongest in the league. The game on Saturday was fought at a rare pace, and draw resulted.
The Chinese teams generally had a bad day, the only winning team being the South, China Boy Scouts in Division II "B."
The results of all matches play. ed in the Hongkong Football League on Saturday are appended:

THE IMPROVED TAMAR "Although at no time in the course of their games with, the Chinese Athletic, did the Tamar gain the lead, with any luck at all they would have won their frát. match of the season, Pan, in the Chinese goal, had a lively after- noon, and required all his skill and Tamar fine from adding to their resource to prevent the nippy

range.
The Tamar were the better side in the second half, and they made fine efforts to score. Only once were they rewarded
and
then
Stewart gave no chance after the goalkeeper had failed to hold hot one from Worthington.
The high wind was not con- ducive to good ball
con- trol, but the Tamar adapted them- selves to the conditions, and but for some splendid goalkeeping by Pan, supported by two dour backs, the dashing attack of the naval team would probably have met
with a deserved success.
A CLOSE THING, The Surreys should have scored more than one goal against South China and yet in a sense they were lucky to win. The goal which do- cided the issue was scored in the first half by Humberstone, who headed goalwards from, about 2 thirty yards, and had the good fortune to see Lau Hing-cheung miss the ball entirely when he endeavoured to punch out.
It was Lau's only mistake of the match, but it cost his side a point. At full strength, the Surreys kept the South China defence on tenter- hooks throughout the whole of the first half, and only determined de- fence prevented the soldiers from running up a big score.
RECREIO FORTUNATE. When Kowloon, playing with the wind, ppened the scoring five minutes after the start of their game with the Club de Recreio, it appeared all Lombard Street to a China orange on a Kowloon vic- tory. Territorially they had 70 per cent of the subsequent play, but the Recreio snatched a victory by taking full advantage of their opportunities.
4
Kowloon's inside forwards ahould have netted at least four times in the first half, but they have yet to learn what to do with a ball handed to them from the touch-line, and glorious opportuni, ties were allowed to go begging,
Cavoille scored the first goal of the match with a swerving left-foot shot which caught the goalkeeper unsighted, and with Turner, Sims and McKelvie in splendid form, the Recreio's nippy forward line was seen rarely in action, except from sudden and dangerous break- aways.
Near the interval, sent "in a hot one
Gosano
Durand failed to hold, and dashing in, Silva equalised.
In the second half, with the wind now in their favour, the Recreio showed up more prominently and Durand was applauded for excellent The goalkeeper played throughout with an injured left arm but showed to advantage in spite of this.

but score.
With the wind in their favour in the second half, the South China forwards retailated in carnest and
for lifteen minutes it appeared that the Dougins must capitulate. Fine play by McGreavey, Mitchell and Bristow eventually wore the Chin- ese down and towards the end, the Surreys, were again in the ascen- dancy.
South China on Saturday's play aro a much better team than their previous form would indicate. The backs are sound, and the halves, energetic, while the forwards are dangerous when once on the move.
