Referring to the recent poison 'alcohol deaths in Buffalo, M“, Quil- len predicted that the increasing use of "redistilled completely de- natured alcohol," resulting from BRANCHES:-Bandjermasin, Bandoene, Bom- the stoppage of many sources of alcohol supply, would soon cause increased deaths among drinkers.

"When I became chemist of the | ́bureau in 1921," said Mr. Quillen, 75 per cent. of the samples of hard liquor received for analysis proved to be really "straight whisky. In 1924 the pre-prohibi- tion whisky had been completely exhausted. As the samples which proved to be real whisky decreased, there was almost a corresponding increase in samples of liquor con- taining apecially denatured alcohol.. (that which the Government has. attempted to poison so effectively that it could not be 'renatured,' or made drinkable) made its appear ance in beverages about March, 1925.

The Government, according to the chemist, formerly used in de- world maturing alcohol a formula known as. No. 6. which was believed to be deadly. Recently it came to his attention that bootleggers had succeeded in overcoming a large part of the poison in that formula, and Mr. Quillon caused it to be discarded by the Government.
