Kowloon Magistracy yesterday afternoon, an unemployed Chinese was charged with demanding the sum of $10 from a former fellow" workman. it being alleged by the prosecution that the defendant attempted to obtain the money bý means of threats.
Mr. J. M. Remedios appeared for the prosecution, the defendant ba ing unrepresented,
Prior to dealing with the facts of the alleged incident, Mr. Reme- dios said that he would take his Worship back to an occurrence of some time ago.. Both the com- plainant and the defendant were. then engaged by the Wing Cheong Hing firm, of Kowloon-City, in the capacities of folis.
Prior to the strike of June 23, 1925, the defendant occupied the position of foreman in the firm, but on the outbreak; of hostilities the defondant ieft and the com. plainant was 'put' 'in his' place in October. The, defendant returned on December 10, and naked to be reinstated. The master was wil ling to`re-employ the defendant provided he became the complain- ant's 'assistant. 'After some dis cussion the position was accepted.
All went well until the end of January, when the defendant ask- ed the complainant if he would like a similar position in another firm. The complainant refused the offer, remarking that he wna satisfied with his presont occupa- 'tion.
Defendant Trapped. Sometime. in February, for cer. tain reasons which he (Mr. Ro- medios) would not mention in Court as the master was at pre- sent in Macao and could not be called, the defendant was dismiss. ed and after that he frequently came to the firm. On one occasion he borrowed $3 from the com- plainant, and went repeatedly for further loans.
On August 31 at about 7 p.m. the defendant with three others, went to the godown of the Wing Cheong Hing firm and demanded $10 from the complainant.. who refused to pay any money to the defendant. The complainant reported the inat- ter to his mastor and asked for a loan, bit was advised to inform the Police. N
A trap was eventually set by the. police and on September 2, two marked $5 billa, were handed to detective who accompanied the complainant.to a restaurant. The defendant, duly arrived accord ing to an arrangement previously made, and the money was handed to him. He was then arrested by the detective..
"On the conclusion of the case, his Worship found that there was Inaufelent evidence of menaces and merely ordered the defendant to sign a personal bond to be of good behaviour for the peblod of-
