JUNK'S ARMS.

·STRIKE SERVICES RECALLED,

That the defendant.should have been commended instead of hav ing been arrested was the submis ston put forward by Mr. Leo') d'Almada, who dofonded the master of à junk, at the Kowloon Magistracy, this morning, when the latter appeared on remand, before Mr. J. H. B. Nihill, on á charge of unlawful possession of two rifles, 288 rounds of ammuni- tion, 86 percussion caps and two wooden bombu.

At a previous hearing the de fendant pleaded guilty but it was stated that Mr. d'Almiada; who was instructed to defend, desired a remand.

Addressing the Bench in exten- uation of the offence, Mr. d'Almada said the defendant had owned the junk for some twelve years. During the seamen's strike in 1922, he was instrumental in bringing foodstuffa from Heung- shan. At the outbreak of the re- cent strike, he again did yeómen service in smuggling food into the Colony at considerable risk.

On one occasion he en-

with whom he had had some trouble and at the beginning of the fourth Chinese moon, he was intercepted by pickets who sank his boat resulting in all its arms being lost. The junk was subsequently salvated and repair ed. The muster made an applica- tion for permission to carry the | armis on his junk, but this was. re- fnsed."

.

In conclusion, Mr. d'Almanda admitted that his client was guilty a of a technical offence and asked that the case be adjourned in order that the defendant's story could be investigated by the police.
