THE DAVIS CUP,
AMERICA HEADED TOWARDS 7TH TRIUMPH.
LACOSTE LOSES, THEN BOROTRA.
Philadelphia, Sept. 9. "America's, defence of her Davis Cup honours commenced at the Germantown Cricket Club, Phila- dalphin, to-day, the challengers being France.
In the first singles; "Elttle "Bill" Johnston defeated the French Star Rene Lacoste by three sets to one, and later on in the day Bili Tiiden overwhelmed Jean Borotra in three straight sets..
Johnson defeated Lacsto 6-0, 6-4, 0-6, 6-0. The weather was fine and cool when, the players made their appearance on the court promptly at 2.30 pm. Both players were warmly ovated by the occupants
of well-Giled stands. The Frenchman appeared, ill at ease and worried. Johnson's amazing accuracy and his tireless driving gained him the first set without trouble, and, he went to 4-1 in the second set, before La- coste pulled himself together. Lacoste drew up to 3-4 but John- son applied his big guns and clinched the set. The third set
was, a
triumph for Lacoste's powers of recovery. He took firm command and Johnston became erratic finally abandoning his efforts and letting the set go 0-6.
Johnston regained his former brillance in the fourth set und sent across a perfect ball of volleys and drives which Lacoste strove vainly to stem.
TILDEN'S TRIUMPH.
Tilden defeated Borotra, 6-2, 6-3, 6-3,

SON SHOOTS MOTHER.
TO END HER PAIN..
Worried because his mother could not obtain the morphia for which she craved to ease her pain, her son shot her and then killed himself.
These facts were.revealed at the inquest at Ilfracombe, on Mrs. Lilian Zerfi, a widow of 68, and her son Henry, aged 42. Mrs. Zer-
was paralysed in the right foot and had been an invalid for years. In letters to her housekeeper she wrote:-
"I think the doctors should al- leviate suffering, and not engthen it. No doctor In the world should shut off a patient's morphia straight away...Mr. Zerm could not see me suffer, and that is why we are going together."
