ROYAL NAVY BEAT
R. H. K. Y. C.
Yesterday evening an interesting. race was rowed between crews representing the Royal Navy and the Royal Hongkong Yacht Club over a mile course, the match being the result of a little friendly rivalry. The race was to have taken place, later in the month but owing to Naval movements it was necessary to bring it forward a little.

The crows were as follows,-Royal Navy; It. W. G. Androwes (bow), Lt. R. C. Hayter (2), Lt. Duncan (3), Lt. J. R. Highton (str.) and Lt. C. M. H. Purdon (cox)..

The start was a good one, the Navy jumping into a half length lead right away. They then settled. down to a steady pace which they maintained all down the course. In the first minute the Club were
striking 15 and 29, the Navy rate being about 30. At various periods the Club, were 27, 28 and 29, the Navy always being a little faster.
Up until the fifth, the scrap was vers tame. Garcia would rush Stone only to find himself tied up 0 at close quarters. Harry was quite content being on the defen- 'sive ́nud „poking away with both hands at close.quarters. London, Sept. 8. The time for the St. Leger Race, which was won by Coronach, was a record, despite the losing of several lengths at the start.
Masked Ruler broke the tapes, but Southbourne was first away from Pinzetta, Coronach and Steel Point. On settling down, Plazetta went to the front followed by -Southbourne and Coronach. At
the half-mile Coronach joined Pinzetta in first place, the pair being ten lengths ahead of Glenalbyn, Foliation and Caissot who were bunched. On turning into the straight, Coronach led, with Masked Ruler, who had come up strongly, lying second, follow- ed by Calasot, Lex and Foliation. Making the remainder of the run-. ning, Goronach won easily, Cais- sot finishing second and Follation third. Masked Ruler was fourth. Lex slipped when three-furlongs from home and Injured its near fore leg. It had to be taken away in a float..
