LONG DISTANCE SWIM AT TSINGTAO.
BRITISH ENTRANT'S FINE VICTORY."
There were 19 competitors, In- cluding one lady, Mra. Marianno Ludwig (Austria), in the long did" tance swimming championship at Taingtao recently. They started from the Strand Beach at 4. p.m. The time selected was shortly after high tide, but for some reason there was a heavy current running and only three of the competitors suc- ceeded in rounding the buoy (Moaning Minnie) and in complet- ing the course.
The result was that the only British entrant, Mr. S. A. Vincent, won a commendable victory in very good time...
Vincent took 64 minutes to reach the "Moaning Minnie" buoy, and did the return journey to the Beach in 49 minutes, finishing at 5.53 p.m. in one hour 53 minutes Not far behind Vincent when approaching the buoy on the outward swim, J. Choquette (America), U. S. 8. Canopus, was swimming stepdily, and after a hard fight, Choquete rounded the buoy some six to seven minutes after Vincent did ao, com-" ing home at longth second in 1 hour. and 59 minutes. During and after the time that. Vincent and Choquette, were busied with their endeavours to round the buoy, a large number of the competitors were having an unsuccessful fight against the tide, and the onlookers witnessed their gallant efforts with admiration and sympathy as one after the other gave up and was helped aboard the following boats.
With the exception of H. N Brown (America), U.S.S. S-30, who finished third no others got to the. buoy Brown was swept a long way out of his course but with dogged persistence kept going and finished at length in the darkness three hours and 61 minutes after the start; a remarkably tenacious performance:
Brown is a well known swimmer and once did a famous performi ance in the Philippines, where, it is said, he was 22 hours in the water. The best Japanese swim- mer reached a point 40 yards from the buoy before being swept back by the tide at last.
Mrs. Ludwig, the only lady com- petitor swarm half the distance out towards the buoy, but found the pace too fast, and then withdrew.
The first three competitors were: I. S. A. Vincent (British) 1 hour 53 mins,; 2 J. Choquette (Ameri- can) three hours 51 mins.
The other competitors who start- ed were: Mcasra, Yussa, Wakamat- su, Araki, Yonami Omoto, Kobayashi, Wakikawa, Hirand (Japan), C. J. Clannon, J. F. Hod- gers, L. Nuevo, W. Hensley, and E. Lund (America), Mrs. Marianne Ludwig (Austria), and Messra. 0. and E. Sheveloff (Russia).
