DREDGING THE HARBOUR.
AN EXPERT TO SURVEY, AT ONCE.
At a moeting of the Finance Com mitteo, which followed yesterday's Council the Chairman, the Hon. Mr. W. T. Southorn, said there was a mattor he wished to bring before the Committee, the question of dredging the Harbour.
The DP.W. had represented to the Government that although the grounding of the two shipa recently was not caused by silting in the.. harbout it was expedient that tho mind of the public 'should be not. at rest. He therefore asked for the appointment of an enginsor who would undertako survey of the harbour-bed.
He understood they had no en- ginoor on the staff available to undertake the survey. It was pro- **** posed to appoint a man at once to do it and to pay him to the end of the year from the surplus of per- sonal emoluments and then place him on the estimates for. 1997. ·
