INVASION OF/KWANGSI. Reports from "anti Red circles states Marsha Wa Pel-fu, the Yangtze Valley, War Dord is return- ing to Central China to direct the "anti-Red" operations now in pro- gress in Hunan
Kuomintang Headquarters in Canton claim sweeping victories in Hunan and mutinies, among North- ern troops in Kiangal and Fu- kien. The celebration of the al- leged defeat of Allied broopa at Nankow Pass and the reported vic torles of the Kuomintang Army in Hunan, Fukien, and Kiangsi is to
take place on August 25th., To prevent the Canton people from hearing news of the actual defeat of the Khomintang Army at Nankow and Kalgan, the Board of Censors in Canton, by direction of the Kuo- mintang Central Executive Com- mittee, is exercising exceptional care in withholding all Information favourable to the "anti-Reds."
The celebration of the "victories" in Canton is to be held under the auspices of the League of Workers, Farmers, Students, and Marchants, a subsidiary organ of the Commun ist Party in the Southern Capital
YUNNAN FORCES MOVE.
A report has been received in Canton that General Tang Chi-yao has at last despatched two Army. Corpa ta invade Kwangsi, ono un- der the command of Lung Wan, from Kivong Nam yia Posch, with Nonning as the "objective, and the other under Hu Yoh-yue from Lo-. plug via Lau Hing, with Kweilin aa the objective. According to this report, General Lau Tsun-wan will be appointed to the supreme comraand of the Yunnan Army operating against Kwangs, but this is scarcely likely in view of the fact that there are aspirants or the honour. In the Yunnan Tanks. The report gives the very surprising news that Fan Shek- sung, the reportedly dead enemy of Tang Chi-yao, has consented to joln hands with the Yunnan units. through the offices of Liao Heng- chui, a prominent general during Yeung Hsi-man's regime."
In consequence of this new de velopment in Kwangai, General Wong Shao-hung despatched Gene- ral Yu Chakpak to confer with General Li Chai on the situation which is becoming more critical every day, as both the Army Corps of the Yunnan unit have already invaded Kwangsi, and are threatening to cut the rear of General Li Chung-yan's, Army operating in Hunan.

In the meantime, however, the owning had been carried away. It lodged against the whistle on the stack and set it off. The sound of the whistle could not be heard on the bridge, so terrific was the noise made by the wind."

EIHAIWEIS FUTURE.
Writing to the NG. Daily News,.
a. Wethalwei correspondent says:— Someone has said. "Happy is the. country which has no history He might have added, "but thrice curs'd' in the place where uncertain- ty prevails." Almost from its in- fancy as a British possession there have been doubt and uncertainty as to Welhalwel's future, one of the earliest rumours being that the lease of the Territory was about to be transferred to Germanya rum- our that was of sufficient Import ́ance and persistence to provoke an official denial..
The Fates, it would seem, have derreed that the. uncertainty which has been such a hindrance to enterprise and development at Weihaiwel for a generation, shall pursue up to the bitter ond. It is now over four years ago that Lord. Balfour announced at the Washing- ton Conference that the Territory would be restored to China. Wo still wait the establishment of a recognized Government at Peking: we are still in doubt as to import- ant details of the terms of rendi tion,we still engage in a fruitless and proftless exercise-marking time.
Fortunately there is another and brighter side to the picture. While in other parts of China dur
