It was at Samaral, a tiny island on the const of Papua, and the cricketers were fuzzy-hended na- tives clad only in loin clouts..
Cricket is very popular among the South Sea natives, so much so that it has displaced many of the indigenous sports, such as spear- throwing and archery, Bats, balls and other gear are very expensive -in-those regions, and the native rate of wages is usually under a pound a month; but this does not deter the natives, so keen are they on the national pastime.
At this match one team was com- posed of Samaral natives, and the other of natives from a mission island near by. The teams were bitter rivals, and the recreation ground was crowded with natives. some of whom had made long and dangerous canoe-journeys in order to be present, in some cases bring ing with them their children and dogs..
