EASY WIN FOR VISITORS.
The first of the series of base- ball matches between the Filipino All-Star team, and local players, was played at the Happy Valley Diamond yesterday, the visitors winning overwhelmingly, by eigh- teen runs to nil.
The Filipinos did not show form strikingly-above-that-of-our local talent, but they took full advantage of many Chinese errors, while not conceding a single error themselves.
Their pitching stall was in good trim, and Bertolfo struck out five. The Chinese have never been credited with being a batting aide, and throughout yesterday's game. they secured but three scattered hits. The All Stars struck safely
nineteen times.
The score by innings was as follows:
Filipinos: 1 1 2 0 0 3 8 318 Chinese: 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0

INQUEST
DEATH OF EUROPEAN LADY..
AFTER IMPRISONMENT.
The hearing was continued on Thursday last in H. M. Police Court, Shanghai, before Mr. G. W. King, H. M. Coroner, of the inquest over the remains of Dorothea, Breathall, who died in the General Hospital about 10.45 pum. on August 6, after being re- moved there from the Amoy Road Gaol in the afternoon of the, previous day.
•
Mr. E T. Maitland conducted the case and said that the troubles which deceased had would not cause death. From appearances, he would say that death. ТЕЛЯ caused by one of the hypnotle drugs.
Dr. A. D. Wall said he had seen deceased on three occasions. The first was several months ago after she bad attempted suicide in.
hotel in Avenue Edward VII. The second time was when she was taken to the General Hospital a week or two ago. On this occa- sion her appearance was com- patible with a large dose of one of the hypnotic drugs. The third. time, was within 24 hours of her death,!
Dr. R. C. Robertson was then' called and said that he had attend- ed deceased at the Amoy Road Gaol about 2 o'clock on the after noon of August 4. She was sound asleep and could not be aroused. At that time he believed her to be in about the same condition as when he had treated her for drugs after the attempt to take her life In the hotel, in Avenue Edward VIL Witness ordered her to be taken to the General Hospital. Her condition gradually became worse until her death. She never re- covered consciousness. The evi- dence that she was under the influence of drugs was very strong. His evidence on this point was the same as that of Dr. Wall.
Det. Sub-Inspr. Seriously, there is no doubt that at some time or other there will be a very serious accident which will in all probability cost the broker concerned more money than he makes in a year through sense less rushing about.
