TROUBLED FOLK INVITED

FORING HIM UP.

Somewhere in the East-end of London a clergyman is sitting at a telephone for hours daily, givi ing advice to people burdened with trouble.

He prefers to be known as "The Servant," and you get into com- munication with him by ringing up East 0548.

"You're thr-r-rough," says the telephone operator; and Immedi- ately there comes to you over the wire a voice anaking. "What can I do for you? Yes, I am The Ser- vant."

A low, musical voice; a volcs that is confidential and comforting, with the shooting qualities that were in your mother's when, as a child, you limped to her tearfully with a torn knos,

For numbers of people The Servant is just a voice; but if your difficulties, are sumeiontly serious, and you are genuinely anxious, it is possible that The Volce will consent to. see you personally.

Only on the condition, though, that you disclose neither his name nor his address.

Hours at the Telephone.. As a consequence of publishing an announcement, The Servant spent several hours yesterday at the end of the telephone.

Asked if he did not find his self-

imposed task a tiring one; he said: "No.. Sometimes the telephone

makes a beastly noise; very often there is a good deal of crackling; but I don't suppose they can Im- prove on it.".

He confessed that "he is the rector of an East-end parish, and that, having been in the habit of giving advice on the phone to lis friends, who, in turn, recommend- ed others to consult him by the. same means, the idea occurred to him to extend the sphere of his work to a wider circle of complete. strangers, and to make his pro- vince the British public in gen eral.

For that purpose he has built himself n

specially designod" small house, in all corners of which he can hear the insistent summons of the phone bell.

"I am here at any time of the day or night," said The Servant. "Of course, it's not physically pos sible to be here always; but still I try to be. To-day the calls have.. been continuous-from all classes. But more have come from mep than from women.

Nor do I pretend to give them guidance on what to do in the police courts or when in financial difficulty. Many people seem to think I am a public purse, and have applied. to me for loans,

"But I do endeavour to give them moral, social and spiritual advice, and I have spoken with many people who are in doubt er» actual trouble. If necessary, I fix an appointment to see, them, and if it is a woman there will be present a sympathetic person of the same sex" 6
