FOREIGN SERGEANT SHOT IN SHANGHAI.
WOUNDED BY GANGS OF ARMED ROBBERS.
One foreign police officer was acverely wounded and one Chinese constable probably fatally injured as the result of an armed robbery, late on the night of the 20th ult. in an alleyway off Foochow Road, Shangkal. According to the mon gre details available it seems that the foreign officer approached the vicinity of the robbery whilst the armed gang of four men were ply- ing their trade. He immediately got into action calling upon the robbers to desiat. Fired upon, Sergeant Bloomfield drew his pistol and retaliated.
The Chinese constable, on duty at an adjacent corner, hearing, the sound of the, shooting rushed up and joined in the fray. Both officers replied to the onslaught of the robbers. The fro of the robbers was effective and both Bloomfold and the constable were shot in the chest. Tha foreign Sergeant's pocket pistol and the Chinese 380 automatic were equal- ly, effective, however, one of the bullets killing a ringleader, On the person of the dead man was found 398 in silver and $117 in notes. The remainder of the gang had taken the difference between this amount, and the $126 in silver, and $167 in notes and 650 pieces of small money.
Detective-inspector Conduit in charge of the plain clothes branch at Louza station began anim- mediate investigation.
