As the men were leaving, there was a light collapse, a few tons of earth and stone rolling down on to the roadway. This proved to be a preliminary to a much larger fall, and seeing the danger of a big collapse the workmen hurried away.
Two or three minutes later, the big landslide occurred, the road being blocked by about 2,000 tons of debris. The fall brought down the overhead electric tram wires; and blocked the road, making it impassable either.to motor traffic for the tram cars.
Coolles were immediately set to work, however, and by late yes- terday afternoon part of the road had been cleared, enabling moter traffic to get through to Shauki- wan. The tramway service was held up throughout the day, how- ever, it being necessary to replace the broken wires in addition to clenging the track.
