AN IMPORTANT OFFICIAL STATEMENT.
The Director of Public Works has lesued the following statement to householders on the upper
levels:
The Penk, Conduit Road and Robinson Road districts are entire ly supplied from the Pokfulam |Road pumping station
Water is pumped to the 750 ft. tank situated cloned to Hatton Rond, and the water gravitates from this tank, which when full holds 388,000 gallons, to Conduit Road and May Road as far as the May Road Peak Tram station and, Robinson Road as far as Penk Road (Seth's corfier).
The Peak supply is pumped to the Peak reservoir, which holds when full 295,000 gallons," and is situated just below the Peak flag- staff. Water from the Peale roser voir gravitates, all over the Peak district west and south of Findlay Path and Plantation Road,
Water also gravitates from the Peak reservoir at night to Mount Gough service reservoir, which holds when full 211,000 gallons, and la situnted on the summit of Mt. Gough, above "Tanderagee?" Mt. Gough service reservoir serves. all the Peak district east and north of Findlay Path and Plantation Road to Wanchai · Gay · and· Mt Cameron...

On Monday morning at about. nine o'clock a large boulder weigh- ing between two and three thou- sand tons fell from the hillside and completely demolished the eastern end of the pumping ațation, carry- ing away the Elliott approach road and seven pumping and supply mains and completely wrecking No. 3.Engine....
No. 2 Engine at the time of the accident was under overhaul and therefore dismantled, the dis- mantled portion being in the eastern half of the pumping station, which is now under hundreds of tons of rock.
The only pump therefore left in- tact is the No. 1, or one quarter of the capacity of the original pump- ing station, and this pump cannot be operated until one of the purap- ing malus has been repaired. The whole of the higher levels is there- fore, completely isolated and is meantime entirely dependent on the water left in the Peak Reser voir, Mt. Gough Reservoir and 750 ft. Tanka, rapidly dwindling quantity.
Work is at present being con- centrated on the repair of one high
to get this through by Sunday or Monday, when it will be possible to pump a small supply.
Work in the second place is being concentrated on the repair of No. 2 Engine, but as both new forgings and castings are neces- sary, it may be a month before this can be completed.
It is impossible so far to say how much, if any, of the No. 9 Engine can be salved, but in any. cuse it will be many months be- fore a full supply can be resumei in the Peak and high level districts.
This explanation is issued so that consumers may realise the real state of affairs and take the neces sary steps to reduce to a minimim the consumption of water from the mains,
Water from nulishe should mean- time be collected for washing and W. C. flushing purposes till further notice.
Drinking water should be boiled.
