"EFFECT OF STRIKE ON

EFFICIENCY!

The annual report of the Chief Officer of the Hongkong Fire Bri- gade shows that during the year there were 180 calls responded to, 124 for fires, 19 for chimney fires, 12 for collapses or landslides and 25 for falso alarms, nine of the Jatter being maliciously given, six due to electrical faults, and the ro- maining 18 given with good in- tent, There were 32 calls more than the year before.

The cost of the Brigade was $393,840, 48 compared with $199.570 in 1924 and $166,786 in 1923. This increase was partly due to the addition of new equip

ment.

Thirteen persons lost their lives at fires or received such injurios that they subsequently succumbed, while seven persons received min- or injuries. Forty-three persons were rescued from collapses and landslides, and 81 corpses woro recovered. The greatest disaster of this nature during the year was that which happened at Po Hing Fong

There was one 'death of a mera ber of the staff, who fell from a drill tower at the Wanchai station a distance of 40 feet. Nine cases of minor injuries were sustained by others.

The Strike.

Owing to the low salaries, tho service has proved unattractive in the past, but in. November 1925 The pay was raised and several re- Icruits were obtained. The posi

The strike had a material effect on the Brigade, 24 of its mern- ters deserting, inclining sight out- of the nine men from the No. 2 fire float moored at Yaumati. As out of the Cantonese contingent of the Police force only eight men deserted of a total of over 500, the remaining mem- bers of the Fire Brigade were worn in as. special constable. This had the effect of improving i thoir morale.

Motor Ambulances.

The netur ambulance service was appreciably augmented dur ing the year. Two new vehicles were added to the equipment, one for Hongkong and one for Kow- loon. The four ambulances, dur- ing the year, attended, 2,265 cases, covering a distance of 17.929 miles. The No. 1 ambulance, in Hong- kong was in greatest requisition receiving 1,000 calls. of which 438 were from the police and 571 pri- vate. No. 4 Kowloon came se- cond with 502 calls, No. 2. Kowloon third with 396 and No. 3 Hongkong last with 359, There werd 2,120 ambulance calls in 1924, 1,712 in 1923 and 1,185 in 1922.
