NEW MEMORIALS,
America is determined to keep alive the memory of her war dead

fresh to this country from Great June 29,
Britain, France or any of the other European countries are at once. held spell-bound at the huge out- lay of money that has made these memorials possible, The United States has expended more money: permanently to memorialise her dead than a full year's payment of the British War Debt. Cities and States have led with each other. to make the most imposing con- tribution to these national mémor- fal aymbola, but the veterans, those men who went through that hell in Europe which has trans- formed the national spirit of many nations, look askance and ques tion the wisdom of devoting so much money for the erecting of such spectacular memorials. At the same time, as the following list will ahow, most of the public moneychas been spent not only with the idea of remembering those who gave their lives but to provide memorials which shall have permanent usefulness in the life of the nation.
