extensions, would reduce the num ber of patients at the G. C. H. I that argument were seriously put forward, it would be interesting to know why it is now considored necessary to dreet a new block of buildings on this particular site.
Maybe as a purely, native hospi- tal, with, perhaps, a'ward for emer geney cases, or for work in con- junction with the University, it would be wise to retain the present Government Civil Hospital build- ing, but we say unhesitatingly that the soonor it is decided to give up this institution as a general hospi- tal, the better will it be. There have been big extensións carried out, to the Victoria Hospital, and it seems extremely unlikely that all the accommodation there will be required for women and children. Moreover, if and when the, War Memorial Hospital scheme is carried through, further fagilitics will be available. In view of these circumstances, would it not be far wiser to set aside the last-named Institution for women and children and to convert the Barker Road in- stitution into a general European hospital in place of the G. CH.7 Or, in the alternative, why not deve lop the War Memorial scherae along general hospital lines? Whatever the solution may be, it is high time the Colony's main general hospital was removed from the altogether unsuitable position which it at present occupies.
