MERITS OF JAZZ.
A NEW YORK DEBATE.
Mme. Marguerite d'Alvarez and the Rev. Dr. John Roach Stratan, recently debated in New York the merits of jazzs, before the Ameri- can League of Professional Women, and the blues came out ahend.
Speaking at a luncheon in the Town Hall Club, Mme. d'Alvaroz said she liked Jazz so well that she wanted Jazz played and nothing else, when she died, and in parti- cular the number she wanted would be Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, Mr. Gershwin, the composer, being present.
On the other hand Dr. Straton, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, declared that though nothing was more certain about heaven than the existence of music there, the programines would contain no jazz at all.
"I love jazz," Madame d'Alvarez said, and would find it hard to live without it. There is good jazz, poor jazz and Indifferent jazz, and books. the same difference apply to hymn object to the speeding up of life, There are those who but such persons should be placed in a museum, alone with King Tut and the othar mämmies.”
Vigorous applause followed her praise of jazz.
Dr. Straton's subject was the question. "What shall we do
about jazz?"
"I would consign it to a place hotter than earth," he said "I have no use for jazz. The thing. to do with it is kill it, not reform it, as appears to be the disposition in certain musical circlea.
"It is inherently vicious and the more you try to improve it the worse it becomes. It is one of the causes of the revolt against authority, of lawlessness, of in- decency in dress and talk. It is bandit muste, beetleg music, and springs from the same spirit that is behind the evolution movement. It is in line with the belief, that nothing is fixed as final. Our God is the God of harmony, and I love. music, but Jazz is of the devil,”
Dr. Stratton sat downOne person applauded. The clergy- man rose and thanked him, re marking that he was happy to find one person present agreeing:
Dr. H. S. Osgood, authority on jazz, remarked that Dr. Straton undoubtedly knew all about heaven, but that he displayed no knowledge of jazz or its meaning.
About 250 persons attended the Juncheon, including a number of concert artists.
BIGGEST SMOKE IN LONDON.
35,000 TONS OF TOBACCO IN THE PORT WAREHOUSES.
London sometimes called "the big amoke" is seen to deserve the namo more than ever when it is known that her biggest "tobacco Jar" at the present moment holds about 35,000 tons of tobacco.
This, with duty, is valued at £40,000,000, and is enough to give every male in Great Britain en. ounce a week for a year.
This is among the Interesting facts given in the May number of the Port of London Authority Monthly
There is accommodation for 88,000 tons of tobacco in the ware- Houses of the P.LA-miles of two and three-storied warehouses, in which hogsheads and parcels of tobacco, passed and weighed and refastened, lie maturing for: months and years.
The duty on a single hogshead (half a ton) of tobacco may well .bo £500.
