PAPER MAKING IN MALAYA.
CHINESE INDUSTRIALIST'S
¡ENTERPRISE.
Mr. Tan Kah-kee, founder and supporter of Amoy University, and the most prominent Chinese la dustrialist of Malaya, is adding" yet another to his many and varied activities, writes our Singapore' correspondent.

an
He proposes to establish a'fac- tory for the manufacture of paper In the state of Johore, and intends to spend two million dollars in or der to do it on a proper basis. Faddy stalks will form the raw, material, and thus rice growers will be provided with market for what is at present practically a wasto.product.'
The new departure is example of the amazing versatility of a highly interesting personality. Mr. Tan Kah-kee is not only the leading importer of Dutch native" rubber into Singapore and the owner of extensive, rubber and pineapple estates, but he manu- factures, brieks, shoes and rubber goods and a variety of other articles. He also owns a string of retail shops throughout Malaya in which his goods are sold "and" he is developing local markets for rubber shoes and straw hats.
His entire financing of that flourishing institution of higher education the Amey University stands as an unequalled example of practical philanthropy in the Far East. Withal, Mr. Tan Kah". kee is a retiring and rather my- sterious personage, of whom the general public know very little in- deed. He does not figure in the public eye and is not among those. present at important "functions. His wealth is very great, but no one can quote even approximate figures. It is stated to amount to quite a number of millions steri- ing.

The summons for alleged, in- fringement of copyright in respect
