It is stated that these are only minor changes, but that within the next 10 years it is expected that

the present quarters will be en larged by 200 rooms. A separate building wul in all probability con tain these rooms since, much, to the consternation of all those who con: insider the present Majestic hotel a gem of purest, water, the present quarters will in time surrender on tirely to a different building. This lies in the far future of perhaps 10 or 15 years hence. When this undertaking has been finally com- plated small vestige of the former handsome residence will probably remain Plans now outlined paper show at the Bubbling Well and Gordon Roads corner a large theatre building with foyer, suffi- ciently spacious to permit using for the big annual balls of Shang- hai, with an amphitheatre whosu distinctive feature is a side wall which can be removed for the sum- mer and give an open air effect and numerous lounging rooms and wardrobes.

CONCERNING CATS:

A STRANGE LOCAL

One of the strangest of the many: queer trades carried on by Chinese in this Colony, and a profession which might easily by overlooked but for the reports issued borlodi- cally of the activities of the So ciety for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, is the export of ents in large numbers to Canton.

The cats which make, this trip are not necessarily cats with a family tree, indeed it appears that any type or brand of the" feline species is equally appreciated by the consigneer.

A gentleman who found himself intrigued by discovery of this tra- fe in cats, and was aqually curious as to the purposes for which pussy la given the "joy-ride," places his estimate at many thousands a year, at least before the strike and the cessation of means of transport.

During the two years preceding the boycott, nearly fifty cats a day were sent to Canton, and, a little knowledge being a dangerous thing, it is not safe to conjecture as to the fate awaiting the crea- tures on their arrival. It is cer- thin, however, that they do not return, and it is rather, significant that lap-mau, a tit-bit which ap- pears on the table of the Hong- kong gourmet comes excludively from Canton. Students, of Can- tonese cun of course draw their own conclusions from the meaning of the words lap-mas.

It has been stated that a cat's pelt is regarded as some value for its fur, and persons purchasing the .more pretentious fox-skin might be well advised to make close examination.

At'ens April 23.-The now li brary presented to the American School of Classical Studies by Dr. Johannes Genadius, former Greek" Minister in Washington. was open- ed to-day with formal ceremonies. General Pangalos presented the site Dr. Henry S. Pritchett, pre- sident of the Carnegie Foundation.' which provided the funds, present- ed, the odifices the library, a 11- brarian's residence and a home for an annual professor. Speeches of acceptance were made by William' C. Lo ng, president of the school trustee, and Richard Capps, form- er Minister to Greece..
