WHAT HAPPENS AT HOME.

Telegrams rarely spend more than a few hours in transit, even though they travel half round the world. Though this is, of course, very satisfactory "from the mer chant's point of view, actual speed Is less important to him than 'com. parative speed. The shortest route is not always the fastest. In fact, distance bears very little relation to the time taken by a message."" It is by no means an uncommon occur. rence to receive at a London office. a telegram handed in at a South American town ve minutes previously, whilst messages from suburbs a few miles away sonie- times take an hour or more over their journey.
In times of congestion, when, for instance, a cable is broken, it Is, often desirable to send a mes“ sage by a most circuitous route. The sender ascertains from the telegraph companies which of their lines is working best..:
The message is dispatched by that route to an agent who is able to. telegraph. It on to its final" destination through an uncrowded line. It is expensive, often total- ling considerably over a pound a word, but the time saved may gain an order worth thousands of pounds.
Anomalies of Time,
An outsider would be puzzled if be compared the times of dispatch and receipt on some of our tele- grams. It is an everyday occur- rence for us to transact in the morning a deal authorised by a telegram put on 'the wire in the late afternoon. This is explained by the fact that messages' are timed on two different bases: their dispatch by the local time" In the country of origin, and their arriva} by Greenwich time;
Some firms employ an all-night staff to deal with telegrams that arrive out of office hours. That
is not always necessary; however, Measages likely to arrive during the night can be addressed to a special telegraphic address, in- atructions having been given to the telegraph companies to phone. such telegrams to a member of the staff, who can then, if necessary dictaté a reply for.tolegraphic dis- patch.
No methods of speeding up the dispatch and delivery of telegrams. must be neglected. Important outward messages can be tele- phoned to the companies, and the companies will deliver inward telegrams by the same means,
But mistakes sometimes occur when telegrams are dictated in' this way. Many firms possess an instrument known as a televriter. The telegraph companies also possess these machines, and one subscriber can be connected to any other one through an ex change. As a message is written, in ordinary handwriting, on one telewriter, it is reproduced identi-. cally on the Instrument at the other end of the wire.
