Battles at Twelve-Mile Range,
So long as naval power depends on the battleship, "or, for" that matter on any type of surface craft, gunnery will remain the most important branch of naval training. In the past ten years the effective range of ship's gune has been, more than doubled, not because the guns themselves are: so much more powerful, but as the result of improvements in the sighting and control of these wea- pons. Before the war 10,000 yards was accepted as the outside limit of effective fire, yet in several of the North Sen.. battles shooting. began at 20,009 yards, and hits were scored at 18,000.
At the present time the, effec- tive range is certainly not less than 21,000 yards, say, twelve miles This is the immense dis- }tance at which ton-weight levin bolts are hurled at a velocity of 2,700 feet per second. The pro- jectile of the 16in, gun-the lar- gest permitted by treaty-tips the reale at 2,340h, bus the 18ja, gun introduced during the wir fired a Peton shell and the 20in. gun with which-Lord Fisher proposed to arm new ships, would have used a 2% ton, shell!
