PEKING'S GATES CLOSED-To-day, as through the centuries, Poking koops out invading armios by closing the mammoth gates in the wall which encloses the city. When the Kuominchun had evacuated the capital, and only the police and gendarmerie remained to keep order, the troops of fragments of the Fengtien forces were kept outside by elamming shut the fes of the city-and then barricading them with sandbags.

LEAVING PEKING BEHIND.-The end of the siege of Peking was marked by the evacuation from the city of the troops of the Kuominchun, who had controlled the capital for nearly two years. By carts, on horseback, and on foot, the war-weary soldiers withdrew to- ward the Kalgan railway, in long straggling lines.
